[edit] Academic Statistics
As of October 2005, Mariner had an enrollment of 2,122 students. Although Mariner has continuously fallen below state averages on the Washington Assessment for Student Learning (WASL) in all subjects (Math, Reading, and Writing) the school has been showing strong gains. In reading alone, there has been a jump of over 40% in the last 7 years.
[edit] Special Events
- Recently several past students formed an alumni association named The Mariner High School Alumni Association (MHSAA). It hopes to help current students with scholarships as well as build community bonds.
- During the 2001-02 school year, Mariner was awarded a Gates Achiever grant by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. With the grant, the school's faculty and student body were divided into six "academies" to facilitate smaller learning communities.
- Mariner is one of the few Gates "Achiever" schools giving out full scholarships to students who qualify.
[edit] Academies
Students at Mariner High school are directed to choose and apply to an academy before registering for their first classes. Each academy offers it’s own set of classes although there are many classes (especially the upper level ones) that have students from several different academies. Academies also host many of their own activities including family nights, after school celebrations and awards. The academy system enables students to learn in a community that they can feel more welcome in. These “schools within a school” let students get to know a smaller number of students and teachers instead of being “lost in the crowed” of over 2,000 students.
The six academies housed at Mariner High School are as follows:
- Quest
- Leap (Learners Engaged in Artistic Pursuits)
- AOL (Academy Of Leadership)
- ICAT (International Communications and Technology)
- Navigator
- Vertu
