Marie Harel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marie Harel (born Marie Fontaine April 28, 1761 in Crouttes, France) is the reputed inventor of camembert cheese.

She married Jacques Harel in Camembert on May 10, 1785.

Marie Harel purportedly invented the camembert cheese in 1791 thanks to a recusant priest's advices come from Brie and to whom she had given refuge during the revolutionary period.

A statue can be seen in Vimoutiers.
