Mariano Álvarez (1818-1924) - Filipino general, statesman, and teacher.

He was born in Noveleta, Cavite.

In early 1896, Álvarez was elected president of the Magdiwang faction of a revolutionary group that fought against the Spanish colonizers at the time. He also helped in spreading the revolutionary movement in the province of Cavite. To stop the Spanish reinforcements, he had the bridge at Dalahican destroyed. Álvarez also led an ambush to prevent the Spaniards from crossing the Calero bridge, also in Dalahican. He also led many other victories as well during the course of the year. In late 1896, Andres Bonifacio, founder of the revolutionary group, named Álvarez general and the second-in-command.

Eventually though, the Americans took over the Philippines, after the Treaty of Paris in 1898.

Under the Americans, Álvarez eventually joined the Nacionalista Party. He soon was elected municipal president of Noveleta.
