Mariager municipality

Mariager municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Aarhus County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 201 km², and has a total population of 8,300 (2005). Its mayor is Erik Kirkegaard Mikkelsen, a member of the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Mariager.
Neighboring municipalities are Hadsund and Arden to the north, separated from Mariager municipality by the waters of the Mariager Fjord, Hobro to the west, and Purhus and Nørhald to the south. To the east is Ålborg Bay (Ålborg Bugt) and the Kattegat.
By January 1, 2007 Mariager municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). Part of it will be merged with existing Arden, Hadsund, and Hobro municipalities to form the new Mariagerfjord municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 769 km² and a total population of 43,049 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
The remainder will be merged into an enlarged Randers municipality.
