Margaret Gardiner, from Woodstock, South Africa is the winner of the Miss Universe pageant in 1978.
During the event held in Acapulco, she received her crown from Janelle Commissiong, the first black titleholder of the pageant. This circumstance, together with the fact that she represented South Africa, and that she is the first winner from the African continent led her to exclaim, "I am willing to marry any man that I love," when she was asked if she would marry a man of native African descent.
She is now working as a print and television journalist in Los Angeles. She is married to Andre Nel.
