Marengo, Wisconsin

Marengo is a town in Ashland County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 362 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 187.3 km² (72.3 mi²). 184.7 km² (71.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it (1.36%) is water. Two rivers run through the town of Marengo. Along the northern border is the Marengo River, flowing from the West, and along the southern border, flowing from the South West is the Brunsweiler River.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 362 people, 132 households, and 99 families residing in the town. The population density was 2.0/km² (5.1/mi²). There were 191 housing units at an average density of 1.0/km² (2.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.96% White, 2.49% Native American, 0.28% Asian and 0.28% Pacific Islander. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.28% of the population.

There were 132 households out of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the town the population was spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,036, and the median income for a family was $34,861. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $17,188 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,487. About 10.7% of families and 14.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.8% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
