Marcellus Empiricus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcellus Empiricus was a Latin medical writer from Burdigala in Roman Gaul (now Bordeaux, France), in the 5th century A.D. He wrote De medicamentis ("On medicines"). Its contents are influenced by De medicina Plinii (an anonymous 4th century handbook of medical recipes based upon Pliny the Elder, Natural History books 20-32) but also contain herbal and magical material of local and Celtic origin. It seems likely that Marcellus himself was a physician.
