The Marabunta is a South American wasp. At 1 to 2 inches long at maturity, it is larger than most wasps but also flies slower. The Marabunta's stinger is quite long and a Marabunta sting is extremely painful. Significant swelling usually accompanies a sting and many victims require immediate medical treatment. Like most wasps, Marabunta often build nests in or around houses and trees because of their protection from the elements. The name Marabunta originated in Guyana, where the insect is most commonly found, and has become a common name for the insect.
