Mar del Plata Film Festival

The Mar del Plata International Film Festival (Spanish: Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata) is a prestigious international film festival that takes place every year, during the month of March in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina. It is a 'Category A' festival, along with festivals like Cannes, Berlin or Venice.

Created in 1954, it was not considered to be a competitive festival, it was more of a display of selected international movies; during this stage the event was named Festival Cinematografico Internacional (International Cinematographic Festival).
During the early years, famous international guests concurred to the event, such as Gina Lollobrigida and Errol Flynn.
The festival continued until 1959 when the Asociacion de Cronistas Cinmetograficos took charge of running it, and during this time the festival was approved and recognized by FIAPF.
In 1964 the festival took a temporary move to Buenos Aires and the name was changed to Festival Cinematografico Internacional de la Republica Argentina (International Cinematographic Festival of the Argentine Republic). In the year 1966 a coup occurred in Argentina, and in the years 1968 and 1970 the Instituto de Cine took charge of the festival.
During 1967 - 1969 the festival was cancelled because other festivals occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
During the 1960s several well-known guests appeared, including: Paul Newman, Alberto Sordi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Vittorio Gassman, Toshiro Mifune, François Truffaut, Karel Reisz, Catherine Deneuve, Antonio Bardem, Anthony Perkins, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Maria Callas, Cantinflas, Andrzej Wajda, Jacques Tati, Lee Strasberg, George Hamilton, and others.
After 1970 the festival was cancelled, yet there were some attempts to reactivate it, but this did not happened until 1996 when the festival returned after 25 years with new renovations.
Since then there's been several changes. In the first years the event was not conducted during the month of March, but in 2001 it returned to its traditional date. Also during this new stage, the festival was granted a 'Category A,' the highest class assigned by FIAPF.

Originally the awards were called Ombú, until 2004, when the name was changed to Ástor in honour to Ástor Piazzolla.
Currently, awards are given to: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Script, Best Iberoamerican Film and the judge's special award.
