Summary of Maria la del Barrio
Maria Henandez is 15 years old. She is a scavenger. She loses her godmother, who before dying begs the local priest, Padre Honorio, not to leave Maria to fend for herself. The priest asks one of his benefactors, Fernando de la Vega, to please let Maria work as a servant in his house. Instead, Don Fernando takes her to his house as his ward, making her a target of hostility for his wife, Victoria, and her niece, Soraya. Maria falls in love with the disorderly son of the house, Luis Fernando, and must fight Soraya for his affections. Luis Fernando falls inlove with Maria and asks her to marry him, but Soraya says he can't because she is pregnant. After Luis Fernando finds out that was a lie, he fights for Maria's love. When Luis Fernando and Maria finally get married, he walks in on an innocent embrace between Maria and his brother Vladimir and storms out blinded with jealousy. He does not believe Maria's baby is his, so when the baby is born, Maria gives it away during a temporary bout of insanity. Luis Fernando finds her in an asylum and takes her home. She wants to know about her baby and tells everyone she gave the baby to a candy seller. Luis Fernando thinks the baby died. Maria is welcomed at home and Luis Fernando tells her that he has a surprise for her. She thinks he found her baby. When she goes to the baby's room she finds the baby and realizes that is not her baby. Luis Fernando tells her that he adopted that baby girl, Maria de los Angleles, so she can take care of her as she would take care of her baby. Maria accepts to keep the baby but she will look for her baby. After 15 years she still haven't find her baby but she hopes to find him. Agripina, the candy seller who took care of Maria's son (Nandito) for all these years, won't let anyone separate her from her son. Maria meets Nandito, but she doesn't know he is her son, and she helps him. One day Agripina is really sick and Maria offers to help her. When she goes to the hospital she meets Agripina. Agripina tells Maria that Nandito is not her son, and that a woman gave him to her. Maria realizes that that woman was her and Nandito is her son. Maria starts to spend time with him, but she does not tell him he is her son so he won't hate her for having abandon him. When Luis Fernando finds out that Maria is spending time with Nandito, he thinks Nandito and Maria have a relationship. Soraya appears looking for revenge and to destroy Maria's life.
