María Rodríguez was born in Cumaná, Sucre (state), Venezuela, July 22, 1924. She is an important Venezuelan folk singer and dancer of the East of Venezuela, she initiates as musician since she was a kid, in folk celebrations like: Comparsas, Velorios and folk theater. She directed the Folk Dance group of the UDO (Universidad de Oriente). As a folk music singer her repertoire includes Fulías, aguinaldos, gaitas, golpes with harp, joropo with Estribillo, diversiones, zumba que zumba, malagueñas and merengue oriental.

For a long time she was accompanied by the musical group El Chiguao, directed by Atanasio Rodríguez, appearing in important scenes of Venezuela, United States, Portugal, England and many other countries. Her more important songs are: El Pellejito and La Oración del Tabaco
