Our Mission
MAP International promotes the total health of people living in the world's poorest communities by partnering in the:
-
- Provision of Essential Medicines
-
- Promotion of Community Health
-
- Prevention and Mitigation of Disease
What is Total Health
Total Health is the capacity of individuals, families and communities to work together to transform the conditions that promote, in a sustainable way, their physical, emotional, economic, social, environmental and spiritual well being. MAP offers its services to all people, regardless of their religion, gender, race, nationality or ethic background.
MAP's international programs help eliminate the causes of sickness and disease by providing free medicines, improving water supplies and knowledge about health threats like HIV/AIDS and establishing community directed health education and training.
To maximize the number of lives we reach, MAP International works in partnership programs with over 300 organizations, agencies and medical missions around the world.
Along with MAP, our partners uphold the standards and guidelines formed by the Partnership for Quality Medical Donations, InterAction, Global Health Council, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, and the World Health Organization.
A Brief History
In 1954, the late J. Raymond Knighton answered a call in his tiny office at the Christian Medical Society on Dearborn Street in Chicago. As the director of an organization that coordinated fellowships among Christian medical students and doctors, Ray had a reputation for knowing “every medical missionary in the world.” So when an executive at a major East Coast pharmaceutical company wanted to donate $25,000 in surplus medicines, he knew just whom to call.
'It completely disrupted operations," Knighton would recall in a 1979 interview. He and his secretary spent the next three months distributing the 11 tons of medicines where they were most needed overseas.
So began the new ministry that would deliver more than $2 billion in medicines and other essential supplies to impoverished communities around the world. Millions of families have been impacted by that single call. Ray Knighton’s thriving legacy impacts millions of people throughout the world each year.
