[edit] Summary
Description |
This is a map of dictatorships in the world since the beginning of the 20th century. Light green countries have been dictatorships at some point in the 20th century; dark green countries are dictatorships as of January 2007 (according to Wikipedia).
Absolute monarchies and countries under foreign occupation do not count as "dictatorships" for the purpose of this map. Neither do single-party states that have never had any single autocratic leader (though these are very rare and usually quite short-lived, since most single-party states will almost inevitably produce an autocrat if given enough time).
Thus, the kind of "dictatorship" displayed on this map can be defined as homegrown non-monarchical autocracy.

Map made primarily with information from en:List of dictators; the status of some countries was checked using other historical sources, but overall this map reflects the consensus on wikipedia more than any consensus among historians. Therefore, take it with a grain of salt.
