Manurewa is the southernmost major suburb of Manukau, one of the four cities that make up the conurbation of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located six kilometres south of the Manukau City Centre, and 26 kilometres southeast of the Auckland CBD.
Manurewa is Maori for soaring birds, the name reputedly referring to the seabirds which are commonly seen crossing the isthmus between the Manukau Harbour and Hauraki Gulf here.
Manurewa has a high proportion of non white ethnicities making it one of the most interesting multi cultural suburbs in Auckland and indeed, New Zealand. Employment for many is at the many companies at nearby Wiri, at Papakura and at the steel mill at Glenbrook. Many others commute to Auckland by car but now increasingly use the improving public transport.
The main shopping centre at Majnurewa is located along Great South Road and is named Southmall.
Manurewa is bisected by the main North-South Motorway which is a divided highway with up to three lanes in each direction. Real estate values in Manurewa vary greatly with suitable areas to suit most incomes and life styles. Areas include western Manurewa with its affordable prices to up-market areas in the east of Manurewa.
Manurewa is fortunate to be the home of the noted and very popular Auckland Botanic Gardens, a large and well maintained garden area that plays host to well over a million visitors a year.
