[edit] Political career

He began his career by being elected to the Legislative Council from the Shiv Sena. He became the Mayor of Mumbai city during 1976 to 1977. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly from a Shiv Sena ticket in 1990. He became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Maharashtra when the SS-BJP coalition routed the Congress in the State Elections. He was promoted to the Lok Sabha when he won from Central Mumbai in the 1999 General Elections. He became the Speaker of Lok Sabha from 2002-2004 during the NDA administration.

He slowly climbed the ranks of the Sena. He became extremely powerful in the Sena and was accused by Narayan Rane of preventing others from meeting Balasaheb Thackeray, the party's President. When he was promoted quickly in the Sena during 1991 Chaggan Bujbal left the party. He was highly respected and held tremendous clout in the Shiv Sena but that all changed when he unexpectedly lost to a unknown candidate in the General Elections.

He was elected for a 6 year term to the Rajya Sabha in March, 2006 after being defeated in the last Lok Sabha election by a hitherto unknown Congress candidate from the Central Mumbai constituency. His defeat was not taken too kindly by Bal Thackeray, and Joshi was subsequently barred entry to the leader's "Matoshree" bungalow for several weeks after that. He was back in favor with Thackeray later.

He also maintains cordial personal and business relations with ousted Shiv Sena youth leader Raj Thackeray and NCP leader Sharad Pawar, much to the chagrin of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray..

[edit] Business Empire

He is a shrewd businessman and self-styled "Principal". He is the proprietor of the Kohinoor chain, comprising of technical schools, hotels, construction, real estate to name just a few. The chain currently stands at around 400 crore rupees. His son Umesh Joshi and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray had successfully jointly bid for the land of the defunct Kohinoor Mills at 273 crores.
