Manitoba Provincial Highway 59

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manitoba Provincial Highway 59 is a provincial highway in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It runs from the U.S. border (where it meets with U.S. Highway 59) north to 8th St. in Victoria Beach on Lake Winnipeg.

The portion of Manitoba Provincial Highway 59 within Winnipeg is also known as Winnipeg City Route 20. Highway 59 is a 4-lane at-grade expressway through Winnipeg and north to the Brokenhead Indian Reserve. North of the reserve, it becomes a two-lane highway. Then, a multiplex to Highway 12 begins, and ends near Grand Beach. From there, Highway 59 continues north, finally ending at Victoria Beach.

Highway 59 runs right through the east end of the City of Winnipeg, and is the main route to get from Winnipeg to Grand Beach. It is one of only two provincial highways (the other being Highway 1 - the Trans-Canada Highway) to cross Winnipeg on both ends, and is also the only crosstown highway on one road.

[edit] Route twinning

Proposals exist to twin the route southward to Highway 52 to maintain the needs of those travelling to and from Steinbach.

The project includes:

  • Twinning of Highway 59 to Highway 52.
  • Possibly a new interchange at Highway 52.
