Manitoba Provincial Highway 1
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Provincial Trunk Highway 1 (PTH 1) is the Manitoba section of the Trans-Canada Highway mainline route. The total distance of the Trans-Canada Highway in Manitoba is 519 km (322 miles).
Most of the highway is a 4-lane divided highway except on some very short sections in western & eastern Manitoba, where the highway is two lanes. Construction is ongoing to twin the western section.
PTH 1 only has expressway status at Southeastern Winnipeg & Portage La Prairie. Plans do exist to bring the whole Highway 1 (Except in Winnipeg) into expressway status. Exit numbers only exist at one interchange.
In Winnipeg, PTH 1 follows Portage Avenue, Broadway, Main Street, Queen Elizabeth Way, St.Mary's Road, St.Anne's Road, and Fermor Avenue where it re-joins the Perimeter Highway (PTHs 100 & 101) and continues east.

[edit] History
The highway was first given the "1" designation in 1942. It was routed on many highways that existed before the Trans Canada. When the Perimeter Highway was built in 1969, most of the traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway was rerouted onto the Perimeter Highway itself, thus avoiding traffic within Winnipeg. However, later that year, the Perimeter Highway's southern (PTH 100) section was merged with the Trans-Canada Highway system, due to the qualification of traffic. That section of the highway was highly used, and still is today.
Today, the highway is a well used, 4-lane divided expressway with the exception of Winnipeg, with a full freeway section in Portage La Prairie, and a single numbered exit. It is used mainly as a connector across the province. On Friday October 6, 2006 the Trans-Canada Highway By-pass was closed around Portage La Prairie due to a structural defect found in the bridge over the CN Rail Line. The by-pass is expected to be closed for approximately one year while a new bridge is constructed at a cost of between $6 and $7 million dollars. Traffic is being diverted through the City of Portage La Prairie although alternate plans are being developed. Truck traffic is being adviced to use PTH 2 as an alternate route.[1]
In Winnipeg, PTH 1 follows a lot of streets, namely Portage Avenue, Broadway, Main Street, Queen Elizabeth Way, St.Mary's Road, St.Anne's Road, and Fermor Avenue where it re-joins the Perimeter Highway (PTHs 100/101) and continues east.
