Manipur University in northeastern India was founded on June 5, 1980. The campus is located in Canchipur, near the ruins of the old palace of Manipur.

The former Jawaharlal Nehru University Post-Graduate Centre was merged with the University on April 1, 1981.

The University was in the news after the Vice Chancellor N. Bijoy Singh and Registrar R.K. Ranjan were abducted at gunpoint in 2004 by militants of the outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) from the outskirts of Imphal. They were shot in the legs before being released. According to a KYKL leader, "The two were punished as part of our special operation to cleanse the education system of corruption."
