Maniac Cop (1988) is a movie directed by William Lustig and written by Larry Cohen. It spawned two sequels, Maniac Cop 2 (1990) and Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence (1993).

Maniac Cop is about a serial killer dressed in an NYPD police uniform who goes around killing innocent people. After being sent to prison for police brutality and murder, he is killed by fellow inmates but returns to life to get revenge on criminals and innocent people. Frank McCrae heads the investigation. Jack Forrest, a young cop, is framed as the main suspect after being set up by the real killer. To prove his innocence, Forrest and his girlfriend Theresa Mallory try to find the real killer.

  • The dead cop can be clearly seen sitting up even though he's dead as the lady cop tosses the chair through a window. The next shot he's back to being dead again.

  • Bruce Campbell wasn't the first choice for the starring role. The producers and director wanted to cast Michael Pare. But later wanted Bruce for the role, due to his horror hero status.
