Maniac 2000
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maniac 2000 (Maniac) was an Irish dance track produced by Mark McCabe. It is a live remix of Michael Sembello's Maniac, one of the tracks from the theme of Flashdance. Released in Ireland in the year 2000, it quickly gained fame & reached number one in the Irish Singles Charts, staying at that position for 10 weeks (March 4th - May 6th). It is the 4th best selling single in the history of the chart & is still the most popular dance song in Ireland today. The track didn't get a chance to become popular anywhere else in the world as licensing issues caused a problem. However, it did reach some other countries such as Spain, as Irish tourists requested the song at nightclubs & gave the DJ a copy of the song. Mark McCabe had no other success in the singles charts, making him a one-hit wonder.
[edit] Remixes
Although Maniac 2000 was created for the year 2000 it is still being played in Ireland today, mostly in Dublin where it has earned acclaim as an Irish classic. Other DJs have tried to remix Maniac 2000 into other dance songs as they feel it is getting too old & it needs a revamp. Songs such as Maniac '06, Wizards Of The Sonic, Dancin' Hardcore, etc. have all been produced by low class DJs none of which have had much success. There is however a general consensus that only way it could appear back in the charts is if Mark McCabe steps up once again to remix it, but he has since stopped remixing & is now a radio host on the Irish radio station RTÉ 2fm. He is infact creating a new album, however, but has stated The first album is not what anyone is expecting. It's as far from Maniac as is possible but if you like listening to music, I think you'll enjoy it. I've grown up a lot in the last six years and that is reflecting in my music. I always said Maniac was just a calling card and this album shows a bit more of what I'm capable of.
