Mangani

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mangani is a word from the fictional ape language in Tarzan novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is the name for the apes that raised Tarzan, as well as the general word for great apes. The language used by these apes is generally referred to as Mangani or the Mangani language.

[edit] Examples

  • Tarzan = White-skin
  • Mangani = Great Ape (also refers to humans)
  • tarmangani = "Great White Apes", i.e., white-skinned people, such as Tarzan himself
  • gomangani = "Great Black Apes", i.e., dark-skinned people,
  • bolgani = gorillas.

  • Kreegah bundolo = "Beware; (I) kill!"

[edit] Mangani as a species of ape

The apes raising Tarzan are commonly portrayed as gorillas but this seems unlikely since in the books, they are explicitly identified as a separate species. Burroughs also gave them many non-gorilla traits such as eating meat. In Philip José Farmer's Tarzan Alive, it is speculated that they are actually a variety of Australopithecus.

The recently discovered Bili Ape shares many of the traits of fictional Mangani including size, locale, meat-eating and aggressive nature. It has been suggested that the Mangani be retroactively identified as Bili Apes.

[edit] The Mangani environmentalist movement

The Mangani is also a grassroots environmental movement in the US, most notably in Florida.
