[edit] Boundaries
It covers the Manchester City Council wards of Fallowfield, Gorton North, Gorton South, Levenshulme, Longsight, Rusholme and Whalley Range. The current boundaries have been in place since 2006. Prior to the 1983 reorganisation of constituency boundaries, the seat contained the townships of Audenshaw and Denton in Tameside Metropolitan Borough, together with the Manchester wards of Gorton North and Gorton South only. Manchester, Gorton has a strong Labour history with a Labour MP elected at every election since 1906 except 1931. The Liberal Democrats did well in 2005, but lost 4 seats in 2006 retaining only Levenshulme and Rusholme. The constituency includes a large student population who tend not to vote, especially in local elections and an increasing population of people from Asia and Africa. Gerald Kaufman, having been Member for over 35 years, is reckoned to have a large personal vote.[citation needed]
