Manbarra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Manbarra people are the original inhabitants of Palm Island, Queensland Australia.[1]

It is estimated that the Manbarra people were about 200 people at the time of Cook's visit, by the end of the 19th century it had been reduced to about 50, apparently because many had left the islands to go fishing for bĂȘche-de-mer with Europeans.[1] In 1909 the Chief Protector of Aborigines visited the Island, apparently to check on the activities of Japanese pearling crews in the area, and reported the existence of a small camp of Aborigines.
