Malcolm George Mackay (born 19 February 1972 in Bellshill) is a professional Scottish football currently playing for Watford. He is also a member of their first team coaching staff.
[edit] Club career
Mackay, who plies his trade as a Centre-back began his career in his native Scotland with Queen's Park, coming up through their youth ranks, before joining Scottish giants Celtic. After this spell in his homeland, Mackay made the move down to England, joining Norwich City for a fee of 350,000 after a successful loan spell. At the end of the 2001-02 season Norwich fans voted Mackay in second place behind Gary Holt in the voting for Norwich City player of the year. In his sixth season at Norwich he was promoted to the Premiership after winning Division One in the last season before it became known as the Championship
However Mackay's joy at promotion was short lived as he was sold to West Ham United for £400,000 before getting a chance to play in the Premiership. During his only season at West Ham they won the play-offs, beating Preston only for Mackay to be released again.
He was picked up on a free transfer by Aidy Boothroyd as part of his rebuilding of Watford and soon become one of the key figures in Boothroyd's odds-defying side. Mackay's experience was an invaluable asset to Watford and alongside Clarke Carlisle and Jay Demerit, Mackay was involved in some fantastic defensive displays as well as scoring some vital goals. At the end of the 2005-2006 season Mackay achieved the unique feat of being promoted to the Premiership for the third successive season, as Watford beat Leeds 3-0. Mackay has been assured by Boothroyd that he will play a part in Watford's Premiership campaign, citing his experience as an important asset to the team.
On the 11th of January 2007, Mackay took his first step into coaching by being promoted to first team coach, following the departure of Dave Hockaday.
[edit] International career
During his sixth and final season at Norwich, at the age of 32, Mackay earned his 3 caps for Scotland. His debut came in a 1-0 defeat to Denmark before playing in a 1-0 victory over Estonia and in a 4-1 drubbing of Trinidad & Tobago.
