Federal route 1 is the first federal road in Malaysia, and also among the oldest federal road in Malaysia since this road was constructed by British government during colonial times. Federal Route 1 became the backbone of the road system in western states of Malaysia before surpassed by North-South Expressway. It also forms about 20% (including part of North-South Expressway from Jitra to Bukit Kayu Hitam) of Asian Highway Network of route AH2.

[edit] History

Construction began in 1909 by British after the Treaty of Bangkok. The British constructed main roads to link their possessions in Malaya. Among other roads are the Federal Route 3 on the east coast and Federal Route 2 linking the east and the west coast. The road grew in importance as it connected every state capital in the west coast (except Perlis and Melaka). Numerous towns grew along its path and passed through all their CBD. The Federal Route 1 is approximately 1000 km (-- miles) and stretched from Thailand to Singapore. After independence in 1957, it became the "backbone of Malaya". By the 1980s, the highway is bogged down with severe congestion and the present PLUS expressways was built to replace it.
