The Malagasy presidential election, 1996 was held shortly after the impeachment of President of Madagascar Albert Zafy and the appointment of his interim successor, Norbert Ratsirahonana.
After an inconclusive first round held on 3 November 1996, former President Didier Ratsiraka and Zafy entered a run-off election, held on 29 December, in which Ratsiraka achieved a narrow victory.
