Malaysia Coat of Arms - embossed

This is the embossed old version. Here's the flat old version

The two tigers supporting the shield are traditional Malay symbols. They are retained from the earlier armorial ensign of the Federation of Malaya, and prior to that of the Federated Malay States.

The 14-pointed star represents the original 14 states of Malaysia (including Singapore). It was not changed when Singapore left the federation, but it has generally been accepted that the 14th point represent the federal territories and the federal government.

The crescent is the symbol of Islam, the official religion of the federation.

The shield is divided in such a way that all 13 states are represented:

  • The five keris (traditional Malay short sword) represent the former Unfederated Malay States of Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu; states that joined the Federation in 1948.
  • Directly below the five keris in the centre are four rectangles of different colours - each representing the former Federated Malay States of Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor; states that first formed a union in 1900 resulting in the present Federation of Malaysia. The permutations of the colours red, black, white and yellow make up the colours of these states. Red, black and yellow are for Negeri Sembilan; black and white for Pahang; black, white and yellow for Perak; and red and yellow for Selangor.
  • The left-most section (with the wavy blue lines) below the top-most keris represents Penang, while the right-most section (with the tree) represents Malacca.
  • At the bottom centre, the national flower - the hibiscus or 'Bunga Raya' - is shown. On its left is the emblem for Sarawak while on its right is the emblem for Sabah.

The words 'Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu' are inscribed under the coat of arms, with these words repeated in Arabic script. The Arabic script replaced the original English words sometime after independence.

[edit] New version

The newer version has updated tigers' heads. The representation for Penang, Sabah and Sarawak have been updated over the years as well.
