Makpal Isabekova (Kaz: Мақпал Исабекова) (Russian Cyrillic: Макпал) (born February 21, 1984 in Panfilov, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union (present Zharkent, Kazakhstan)) is a Kazakh singer who rose to popularity after placing sixth in the 2004 edition of SuperStar KZ, the Kazakh version of Pop Idol, shown by Perviy Kanal Evraziya.

[edit] Biography

Makpal's father was an artist, her mother was a school psychologist. They had three children, of whom Makpal was the youngest. From a young age she wanted to become a singer. She enrolled at a music school but had to leave because of her inability to master playing the dombra.

When Pop Idol fever reached Kazakhstan in 2003, she entered the competition and reached the final twelve easily. Astonishingly, she was eliminated in the seventh round in January 2004.

She immediately started working at her musical career, with the help of producer Erik Tastembekov. Apart from a brief return to Superstars.KZ, she spent 2004 producing video clips and developing a working collaboration with Ivan Breusov, a native of Almaty, revelation of the Russian Star Factory and a lead singer with the group 101. In a video made in Turkey, she sang a song by him ("Была ли любовь" "Was it love?") and in an autumn video both sang together in "Ноябрь" (November).

2005 saw her career at a peak. She made several video clips, many of which were only aired after her performance in Latvia: "Сердце, скажи"(Tell me, heart), "Кто остановит дождь?" (Who will stop the rain?), "О тебе" (About you) and the Kazakh songs "Аяла" (Ayala) and "Мен жайлы" (About me).

At the yearly Novaya Volna summer festival for promising artists in Jurmala (Latvia, 2005) she surprised many and finally made herself known outside Kazakhstan and Russia. Though the expert jury had only put her in eighth place, she received the prize of the popular jury and on her return, was treated as a national hero in Kazakhstan. Her first music album after this (Первый поцелуй, First Kiss) again in collaboration with Ivan Breusov, was an instant success.

She has also sung and performed with the group 101, with Dilnaz Akhmadieva and with Evgenyi Zhumanov.

She claims to have been influenced by Anastacia, Alicia Keys and Boys II Men
