Makanda is a village in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 419 at the 2000 census.

Makanda is located at 37°37′5″N, 89°13′46″W (37.618190, -89.229545).GR1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 419 people, 180 households, and 115 families residing in the village. The population density was 37.4/km² (96.7/mi²). There were 188 housing units at an average density of 16.8/km² (43.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.18% White, 2.63% African American, 0.48% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, and 0.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population.

There were 180 households out of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the village the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 126.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $41,607, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $32,222 versus $22,031 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,937. About 6.2% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.9% of those under age 18 and 4.5% of those age 65 or over.

Makanda is home of annual Vulture Fest, an event involving vultures and arts&crafts fairs. The fair is Makanda's sole source of income, and its existence depends wholely upon its success.
