Makamo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Japanese tokusatsu production Kamen Rider Hibiki (仮面ライダー響鬼), Makamo (魔化魍) refers to an assortment of monstrous creatures that usually dwelled in the rural areas and consumed human beings as food. In contrast to the humanoid adversaries in other Kamen Rider series, Makamo were usually gigantic monsters of the kaiju genre whose designs were based on mythical creatures from Japanese folklores. Each Makamo has its specific name. For example Bakegani is crab Makamo while Yamabiko is monkey Makamo. Human sized makamo appear later in the series.

[edit] Douji and Hime
Each Makamo was attended by a pair of humanoid servants that function as its "parents". The Douji (童子), the one resembling a youth in appearance, bears a female voice, whereas the Hime (姫), the one resembling a young girl in appearance, bears a male voice. Each Douji and Hime look identical to other Douji & Hime. They can transform into Kwaidouji (怪童子) and Yohime (妖姫) respectively to enhance their fighting abilities tied to the Makamoou they look after. There are also more powerful versions that act as field commanders; they are referred as the Black & White Puppets.
[edit] Standard Version
These types are the standard "parents" of the makamou and possess abilities based on their child; such as having crab claws and dragonfly wings.
- Douji (童子) - this word or name means "Prince".
- Kwaidouji (怪童子) - this word is a coined word which combines "Kwai-doh (怪童) - the child with herculean strength" and "Dohji(童子)". Creature form of Douji.
- Hime (姫) - the word or name means "Princess".
- Yo-hime (妖姫) - the word or name means "Fascinating Princess". Creature form of Hime.
[edit] Warrior/Armored/Devourer Version
These are the enhanced versions of Douji and Hime. They are fed a specialized orb, by the Puppets, which increases their powers and gives them armor. The Douji and Hime of Nurikabe in Shimotsuke was the first to receive this by a Black Puppet and became the Mushadouji and Yoroihime. However, it is applicable only for a short time. Although the Douji of Ubume in Lake Kamanishi that received another orb by a Black Puppet became Musha-dohji, it became the mutant called Midaredouji/Devourer somehow. The Midaredouji has the feature that it doesn't attack humans but only the makamou. The Mushadouji and Yoroihime of Yoroi Tsuchigumo in Kayanoki got from a Black Puppet an improved orb made by The Man and The Woman that did not have the time limit.
- Mushadouji (武者童子) - the word or name means "Warrior Prince".
- Yoroihime (鎧姫) - the word or name means "Armored Princess".
- Midaredouji (乱れ童子)/Devourer - the word or name means "Berserk Prince".

[edit] Puppet Version
These are more powerful versions of Douji and Hime, who act as field commanders to their weaker sibilings. They are able to create Parent Makamou and enhance the powers of the other Douji and Hime. They are also telepathic and are controlled by the "Original" Douji and Hime. They are then all destroyed by Super Douji and Hime after being created.
- Black Puppet - A Douji and Hime garbed in black, given the task of creating the Giant Type Parent Makamou.
- White Puppet - A Douji and Hime garbed in white, who's task is creating the Summer Type Parent Makamou.
[edit] Super Version
They are the "perfected" version of the Douji and Hime clones. In fact, they're almost a perfect copy of the "originals" with one minor difference; they're a bit incompetent and tend to goof-off now and then. They're first mission given was to elimate all the existing puppets and fight the Oni. Unlike its predecessors, they don't transform (like the Basic or Warrior Types) or possess extra supernatural abilities such as creating other makamou (like the Puppets); however, they're powerful enough to fight the Oni hand-to-hand. Later on, they develop a homicidal personality even towards each other, similar to the weaker versions of their sibilings. In addition, they begin to rebel against their original creators.
- Super Douji - He wears a red uniform. He also tends to act like a dimwit. He fights with a baton.
- Super Hime - She wears a purple uniform and fights with a metal fan. She's the brains of the duo.
[edit] "The Man and Woman Who Live In The Western Style House" Version
They are the "Original" Douji and Hime and are the masterminds of the entire Makamou; thus making them the main villains of the series despite not appearing that often. Because they're the original version, the Original Douji has a male voice and the Original Hime has a female voice. In addition, it seems they're well educated and civilized. There's indication that they're immortal and could've existed since ancient times. Over time, they managed to blend into human society without any problem and because of it, they're able to conduct experiments to make their kind even stronger to not only to defeat the Oni, but destroy humanity. They also possess telepathic abilities, such as controlling the Puppets. In the end of the series, they are relieved of their duty by Westernized versions of themselves. It is unclear how many clones of the duo exist.
- "The Man" - The "Original" Douji dressed in a brown kimono and is seen wearing glasses. He is replaced by a Western version of himself wearing a tuxedo and top hat.
- "The Woman" - The "Original" Hime dressed in a white kimono and carries a parasol. She is replaced by a Western version of herself wearing a European dress.
[edit] Types of Child Makamou
These creatures are created by the Black and White Puppets and are protected by Dohji and Hime.
- Giant Types - They're the most common in the series; they're pretty much daikaiju.
- Summer Types - These types are human-sized, but their true power comes from their ability to replicate themselves in large numbers and when one is destroyed they can easily be replaced. The key to destroying them is to destroy the master copy so no more replicants can be created. Ongekida (Drum Weapons) are the most efficient way of destroying them.
- Experimental Types - They are developed by The Man and The Woman after the Giant and Summer types failed to kill the Oni and are usually not accompanied by a Douji and Hime. These types are humanoid but are stronger than the previous types. Later on, many become immuned to the Oni Attacks after the "The Man and Woman Who Live In The Western Style House" gathered data from the Armed Saber, which was stolen by the Super Doujhi and Hime.
