Mak (麥) is an English transliteration of the Chinese, 麥 (Pinyin: mài), based on its Cantonese pronunciation. The literal meaning of the surname is wheat or barley.
Because there are different ways to approximate its pronunciation, the surname mài can be Anglicized with different spellings. Mack, Mark, Mai, and Mac are transliterations of the same Chinese surname.
Mak is also a Dutch surname. There were two families of Maks originating in The Netherlands. One was a family of sail makers, the other a family of contractors (or brick layers).
