Major Henderson Incident

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Major Henderson Incident - On June 30, 1975, a dozen North Korean guards and pressmen (reporters) assaulted American Army Major W. D. Henderson, a United Nations Command security officer in the Joint Security Area, injuring him seriously. He was trampled on by the North Koreans and suffered a fractured larynx before he was rescued by United Nations Command guards.

Major Henderson sat on a bench located outside of T2. A North Korean Reporter, who at the time was known for instigating fights, ordered Major Henderson to move out of his way. When Major Henderson refused to obey the order, the reporter spat on him. Major Henderson stood up and the North Korean reporter struck the Major. The Major returned the punch and several North Korean guards then attacked Major Henderson. The guards dragged Major Henderson to the ground, beating and kicking him. Major Henderson suffered a crushed larynx and was medically evacuated by helicopter. Major Henderson survived and continued his career to retire from the United States Army.
