Major J. Hayes, played by Steven Culp, is a fictional character from the TV program Star Trek: Enterprise. He first appears in the third-season premiere, "The Xindi".
Hayes' first name is not revealed in the TV series, although his first initial, J, is embroidered on his uniform. Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin's non-canon novel Last Full Measure indicates Hayes' given name is Joss (apparently a reference to Joss Whedon), though in the forthcoming expansion set for the Star Trek Customizable Card Game, These are the Voyages, his card features the name Jeremiah. Each card for the game is approved by Paramount Pictures so this name is also a possibility for the major.
[edit] Character history
The episode "Hatchery" reveals that Hayes graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. The character is introduced as the leader of the elite MACO team assigned to Enterprise when the ship is sent to the Delphic Expanse. He has a rivalry with Lieutenant Malcolm Reed, who thinks that Hayes is trying to take over shipboard security. Hayes and Reed resolve their rivalry in "Harbinger."
In the penultimate third-season episode, "Countdown", a Xindi-Reptilian shoots Hayes as he is beamed off of a Xindi ship after rescuing Ensign Hoshi Sato. Dr. Phlox is unable to treat Hayes' wound; the major dies. (Steven Culp coincidentally portrayed a character on JAG who also dies in the same first-run broadcast week.)
