The town is famous as a copper mine district, since early 17 century. Trough history, mining development was hold by many foreign owners (Czechs, Belgians, Austrians), and was extensively exploited. City was industrialized in mid 20th century, by the industrial programme supported by SFR Yugoslavia's Government of that time , and personal influence of J.B.Tito (marshall and lifetime prime minister since the end of WWII until 1980.). Trough late 20th century town was in huge industrial progress and one of the most developed areas in copper mining and metallurgy. The fall of industrial production was a deed of Slobodan Milošević's rule and his pions in the town during the 1990-ies. Now, town is struggling to survive and renew industrial production.
