Reference Desk categorization
Wikipedia:Reference Desk is not for those who want to write articles but for those who want Wikipedia to ask something. In other words, it's for readers and not editors. So why is it under the heading "Writing Articles"? -- Paddu 14:05 29 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- The above question was lost into the archives unanswered, so I'm posting it again. I feel there should at least be a link to Reference Desk in the `Encyclopedia' section. Readers who are looking for info. on something shouldn't have to look for `Reference Desk' in `Writing Articles'. Also I feel the same is true about the `Requested Articles' link. -- 210.214.131.219 06:12, 15 Nov 2003 (UTC) (Paddu)
Time
In regards to my This American Life entry for anniversaries...Why is a change made at "01:58, 17 Nov 2003" considered a November 16th change? In my book it is a November 17 change. Please advise. Kingturtle 03:55, 17 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Technical problems
- The "Community" column containing all the different language version is way too wide when viewed using Opera 7.21. This seems to be connected to the language entry between afrikaans and (araby). Would be nice if somebody fixed... Even Holen, 01:44, 18 Nov 2003 (GMT+1)
-
- The problem is with the Windows version of Opera, not Wikipedia. Even Linux version 7.23 of Opera shows the page correctly.
- My IE6 doesn't show Main Page correctly. The yellow and blue tables are rendered with some huge height and I don't see any text on them. Some other pages are completely blank. (Opera7 is OK.) User:ilya

Off: HTML of Wikipedia
I realise that this isn't the place, but where can I discuss the quality of the HTML (in terns of its validity and accesibility) used in Wikipedia? Andy Mabbett 20:00, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Deleting things from the Main Page without discussion
OK, I'm taking this personally. Every single time I put something on the Main Page, it is deleted withtout comment. This has gone beyond geting old, it's offensive. RickK 02:36, 25 Nov 2003 (UTC)
- Calm down. I simply replaced the sub-1KB entry you put up with one that is far more complete and therefore a better example of one of our history articles (that is why it is called "Selected Articles" - only good examples should be in that part of the Main Page). Oh and anything listed on the Main Page has to be listed on the corresponding day page before it is put on the Main Page. Sorry, but Areopagitica simply didn't fit the bill. Read Wikipedia:Selected Articles on the Main Page for the guidelines. --mav
Main Page's WIki-Code
I am interested in getting the spanish wikipedia to look more like the English Wikipedia, is there a way to see the wiki-code for the page, because it is protected and you can't see the wiki-code (don't know if it is called like that) Know the answer, please post it here please.

Comment to Andy
Hi, please don't reorganize this Talk page in the way you have been doing. It is counter-intuitive; in all but one or two exceptions, discussions on Talk pages are chronological in order. You cannot unilaterally insist on a different organization. People will continue to add new message at the bottom and people will continue to look there for new messages. If the page seems cluttered to you, feel free to move older discussions into archives, but normally we don't do this until the page is >= 30Kb in size. Thanks for your understanding. -- Viajero 13:47, 3 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- This page is an unwelcoming, user-unfriendly mess. Andy Mabbett 13:54, 4 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Years
"2001" on the main page ("we started in...") should be a link. Why is there no link to "2003", alongside todays date (to be changed to 2004 in due course)? Andy Mabbett 13:54, 4 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I add ecology to the main page.
I was bold because in nearly two years on Wikipédia, I have never (as far as I can remember), edited the main page. That will perhaps be my unique opportunity ever.
If anyone objects to this addition, please discuss it here. I think the article is a major starting point for a whole field of study, which is now, quite independant in most countries I am aware of. The article is quite complete (though you may feel like rephrasing a lot of my english), and opening to many other articles. Anthère
Is is possible to add a link to the Corsican wikipedia main page at: http://co.wikipedia.org/wiki.cgi since the main page is protected ? Many thanks. Paul

Could you please term it 'corsu'. Thanks, Viajero. Paul

Perfect! Paul
THERE IS REAL PROBLEM >> IN MULTILANGUAGE SELECTION IS TEXT "SLOVENSKO" WHAT DOES MEAN SLOVAK REPUBLIC, BUT IT IS SLOVENIAN(SLOVAK REBULIC AND SLOVENIA IS DIFFERENT COUNTRY) LANGUAGE. COULD SOMEBODY PLZ FIX THIS?
- Fixed (I hope)! -- Viajero 19:44, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)
-
- Note: The problem is that the languages on the Main Page are normally denoted in their original form and Slovensko means Slovenian in the Slovenian language and at the same time Slovakia in the Slovak language. Juro23 Dec 2003
<br>
Why the <br> in the anniversaries section?
It causes things like this:
12 December - ~~ - UNICEF - Nobel
Prize -
Hector Berlioz - ~~ - DOOM - Tanganyika
to appear in any browser without the exact size font/window?
Won't the browser wrap the text appropriately without it? Tristanb 23:40, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)

- Yeah, thanks for fixing it. My bad there. Pakaran 23:51, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I've got a larger font, so the top three rows end at a close distance from the right margin. I see the point of the br with smaller font sizes :-) Tristanb 23:55, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Who ever chose the colors for the main page, thanks, they look great! —Noldoaran (Talk) 00:00, Dec 14, 2003 (UTC)
I have some suggestions about the contents of Main page, especially (but not limited to) of Selected Articles, you may glance at Wikipedia:Experimental Main Page. --Ilya 12:48, 16 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Briefly: layout not bad; use of HTML tables very badly broken (what do you mean? Ilya). Stats box needs lable. Date box should include link to 2003.
- Let's discuss it on Wikipedia_talk:Experimental Main Page -- Ilya
It's December 17, UTC. Time to add the Wright Brothers's first flight to Anniversaries.

I have been playing with the "Encyclopedia" section at: User:DavidLevinson/MainPageTemp The key difference is the use of links in the headers as macro topics, under which are the somewhat more specific topics. Comments? dml 04:55, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
The 'Riddle of the Ring' has been solved - that is, 'what is the ring' that Plato, Wagner and Tolkien talk about. That would be worth putting on the first page - (see The Cursed Ring). Barfoed 09:17, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Saturnalia
Is it appropriate to put the Saturnalia in the Main Page? Its a Roman festival and begins today! Muriel Victoria 14:25, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Not enough information. It has to be a good article, not necessarily relevant to the day or time. r3m0t 17:58, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Return of the King
I suggest under In the News that we link to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (film) --Raul654, 17:15, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Doesn't get released here (Australia) until Boxing Day (the day after Christmas). Also, many Wikipedians don't like having entertainment stuff in the Current Events on Wikipedia. If we have The Lord of the Rings there, are we going to have a link to World Idol? - Mark Ryan 17:21, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Well, I cannot speak to australia, but it seems like I can't turn on the news right now without hearing people talking about the movie (for better, for worse). And just because we do it for one particular (highly touted, news making, etc) piece of entertainment doesn't mean we have to do it for them all. --Raul654 17:38, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Great new thought - I want feedback!
I just had an interesting idea and I wanted to get some feedback. On the main page, we have catagories for "In the News", "Recent Deaths", "New Articles" and "Anniversaries". The only way for a non-timely article to get put there is just after it is created.
My thought was - why not create a 5th catagory - "Featured Articles"
People could nominate articles on the discussion page (or would could have a special page just for that). That way, nontimely articles get their time on the main page too. Personally, a lot of the editing I do is on technical articles, which never makes it to the front page. I think this is a way of rewarding people who have similiar tastes. --Raul654 11:00, 22 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I've created a page for further discussion of this topic --Raul654 17:27, 22 Dec 2003 (UTC)- I'll archive it there later --Raul654 22:44, 22 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Main Page/iTemp
So, I've got some beta version of my experimental Main Page. Here's (low-res) snapshot. Look at the page. Add comment. And please try at least to understand what I'm saying before replying.
I'm really sorry if you don't like this picture hanging on this wall and taking your time. Delete it if you think it's burden. ilya 01:01, 27 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Not bad, but I'm afraid I prefer the current Main Page. It looks lessy busy/messy, and yet it contains more useful links. -- Timwi 01:11, 27 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- May you describe what links? ilya
- Everything in the two boxes titled "Selected Articles" and "Encyclopedia". Also, you have links to random articles on Wikipedias in other languages; I don't think I like that. -- Timwi 01:40, 27 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- They are not random. Certanly, as for those languages I understand better, they are what I've read and recommend (such as de:Deutscher Bauernkrieg) and for languages I don't understand they are almost random (Hebrew kibbutz). But this looks like a matter of taste. One can hardly expect when one man selects 30+ articles that others will agree.
- I really do not understand the usefulness of Encyclopedia section (Family and consumer science, Statistics, Handicraft... I do not object the articles, but why them on the main page?). In my plan, thi goes to Wikipedia:Browse -- just the same, if you want, but not Main Page
- As for Community you can find main links at the right of the page, while others will be accesible via what I called Wikipedia:Central (which is separated from Main Page to make the MP more understandible for newcomers.)
- Selected articles is a matter of taste. If we first speak about some general scheme, then we can vote and see what should be placed. You see, I've put 30 articles what I like. Suggest yours, and let's make a deal.
- If you are not interested in Main Page/iTemp feel free not replying; this will be for others. 194.85.64.47 13:39, 27 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Our opening page should not perpetuate the vulgar error of calling it The Messiah. Adam 02:00, 27 Dec 2003 (UTC) It should be either Handel's Messiah or just Messiah.

The biggest adobe structure of the world
Today, I put a new article called Bam Citadel, about the biggest adobe structure in the world, which has recently (26 Dec 2003) been destroyed by an earthquake. But it is not shown in the Main Page as a New Article. How could I mention about it on the Main Page, as this page seems not editable.
