Maintirano is a coastal city (commune urbaine) in western Madagascar in Mahajanga Province approximately 325 kilometres west of the capital Antananarivo. Maintirano is capital of the Melaky region on the western coast of Madagascar, population is apx. 16,000. Fairly hot climate; difficult access to the region due to lack of roads and few commercial flights. Main local products include shrimp and beef. Inhabited mainly by people of the Sakalava tribe.
