The Maine Senate Election of 2008 will be held on November 4, 2008. Republican Senator Susan Collins has indicated that she will seek reelection. Both parties believe that this Senate contest may be one of the most competitive senate races during the 2008 election.

On the Republican side, Collins is likely to be renominated with little or no opposition. Collins, a moderate, is generally viewed to be popular among this states Democratic-leaning electorate.

On the Democratic side, no candidate has formally announced, but first district Congressman Tom Allen is considering a bid. If Allen runs, he is almost assured of winning his party's nomination.

National pundits have speculated on a possible Collins-Allen race. Conventional wisdom holds that the race would be competitive. Stuart Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Political Report lists Collins and Colorado Republican Sen. Wayne Allard as 2008's only vulnerable incumbents. The Cook Political Report lists the race as "likely Republican," and CQPolitics lists the race as "likely Republican." [1]
