Maikala is one of the ancient names of Mangalore. The Bearys of the Tulunadu refer Maikala to the city of Mangalore, which is their cultural and economical capital. The word Maikala is derived from the the word Mayadevi which is a Budhist godess.

According to historian Dr. B.A. Salethur, Maikala was an area in the southern part of Mangalore. It got its name through the Kadri Manjunath Temple, which earlier was a Buddhist temple. The Buddhist goddess Tara Bhagavathi was also known as Mayadevi. In course of time it came to be called Maikala, or Maikal. Historians conclude that Maikala is one of the ancient names of Mangalore.
