Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State in Nigeria. It is home to two markets, a museum and is served by Maiduguri International Airport. Maiduguri has one of the best-equipped universities and hospitals in Nigeria, the University of Maiduguri. Estimated population as of 2007 is 1,197,497.[1] The soccer team El-Kanemi Warriors is based in Maiduguri.

On 18 February 2006, riots related to the Prophet Muhammad cartoons published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten left at least 16 people dead. Eleven churches were torched during the protests.

The city lies at the end of a railway line to Port Harcourt. Maiduguri is one of the richest states when it comes to culture and the islamic religion.
