[edit] Summary

The Maryland Hospital for the Insane, later known as Spring Grove Hospital Center, was originally located in the City of Baltimore at the site that is today the location of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Maryland Hospital moved to Catonsville, at a site known as "Spring Grove" because of the presence of a number of springs and spring-fed ponds, around the time of the U.S. Civil War. This c. 1853 image is an architect's rendering of the "new" hospital that was planned for the current site in Catonsville.
