Mah Shahr is an ancient and small city and port in the Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran. Originally known as Machuleh and Mahrouyan, it eventually came to be known as Bandar-e Ma'shoor. The name changed again in 1965, this time to Bandar-e Mah Shahr. The name was changed to Bandar Imam after the 1979 revolution.
Mah is Old Persian for "moon", and shahr is Old Persian for "city" or "land", and thus Mahshahr can be translated to mean "city of the moon". Origin people of Mahshahr are mainly bakhtiari; But Arabian people have came there in the near times. There people speak in Bakhtiari dialect.
The city's port is one of the most important in Iran, exporting gas and refinery products from Abadan.
Mahshahr includes the number of two important universities. The Islamic free university and a branch of Amirkabir univercity from Tehran. Both include engineering sciences.
