Mahdaviat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mahdaviat is a religious term in Iranian Shi'a Islam meaning "belief in and efforts to prepare for the Mahdi". Believing followers of any Mahdi claimant can be referred to as Mahdawis (or Mahdavis); their belief, faith or school of thought is thus Mahdaviat (or Mahdawia(t) and similar transliterations, depending on Arabic, Persian or Urdu pronunciation).

In Islamic eschatology, the Second Coming of Isa (Jesus) is preceded by the appearance of a figure known as the Mahdi or "rightly-guided one". Shi'ah Muslims believe this person is the same as the 12th Imam (also Imam Zaman), who was hidden by God following the death of his father in 874, and will reappear as "the restorer of religion and justice who will rule before the end of the world".

According to Masoud Poursayed-Aghaie, head of the Bright Future Institute in Qom [1]:

Mahdaviat is a code for the revolution, and is the spirit of the revolution

The belief is reportedly [2] held by approximately 20% of Iranian Shi'a, and has been associated with the banned Hojjatieh Mahdavieh Society [3].

The followers of Indian Mahdi (or Mahdi-e-Mow'ood) claimant Syed Mohammad Jaunpuri are referred to as Mahdavis (Urdu/Persian: گروه مهدويه ), and their belief system is also known as Mahdaviat (Urdu/Persian: مهدويت).

[edit] Recent Newsworthiness

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad concluded his 17 September 2005 address to the United Nations General Assembly [4] with discussion of the Mahdi and a prayer for his appearance:

Dear Friends and Colleagues, from the beginning of time, humanity has longed for the day when justice, peace, equality and compassion envelop the world. All of us can contribute to the establishment of such a world. When that day comes, the ultimate promise of all Divine religions will be fulfilled with the emergence of a perfect human being who is heir to all prophets and pious men. He will lead the world to justice and absolute peace.
O mighty Lord, I pray to you to hasten the emergence of your last repository, the promised one, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace.

He has also been reported as claiming that:

[T]he last and final solution to all problems of this world would be the reappearance and rule of the last Imam of the Age and last descendant of Prophet Mohammad's (PBUH) Infallible Household — Imam Mahdi (May God Hasten His Reappearance). [5]

and that:

Our revolution‘s main mission is to pave the way for the reappearance of the 12th Imam, the Mahdi [6]
