[edit] Aim
The institute aims at shaping its students into healthy and disciplined young citizens of character and culture. It places emphasis on practical and professional experience so as to enable them to secure employment in industry immediately after completion of their studies and also become entrepreneurs. The institute also nurtures a long-term goal to become a premier institution for engineering and technological education in the state and the country.
[edit] Courses
The institute offers a four-year degree Bachelor of Technology, in six key disciplines:
- Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT).
- Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE).
- Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE).
- Department of Mathematics and Humanities (M&H).
- Department of Mechanical Engineering(Mechatronics) (MCT).
- Department of Metallurgy and Materials Technology (M&MT).
Every semester has a minimum of eight courses, which includes a minimum of two laboratory courses.
Students are required to attain a total of 212 credits and attend the institute for duration of not less than four years and not more than eight years to be considered for the award of the degree. The institute follows JNTU’s strict attendance regulation, which requires students to put in a minimum class attendance of 65% to progress to the next semester.
External (university) exams are held every semester in the campus itself and marks in all these exams count towards the final aggregate. A student must get a minimum of 40 marks out of 100 to be considered ‘passed’ in a course.
[edit] Admissions
The minimum criterion for admission is 60% marks in the Intermediate/10+2 Examination. Students are admitted primarily based on their ranks in the Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET), held by the JNTU every year. The institute also admits students under the Management or NRI Quota, based on the payment of money, in lakhs of Rupees. Often, only the highest and earliest bidders are assured of admission.
Competition is usually intense and is increasing dramatically every year as the institute’s profile in both academic and extracurricular activities is rapidly improving.
A recent ruling on private institutes unaided by the government, by the Supreme Court of India, might change the admissions scenario of the institute from the next year.
[edit] Departments
The institute has 8 departments:
- Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT).
- Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE).
- Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE).
- Department of Mathematics and Humanities (M&H).
- Department of Mechanical Engineering(Mechatronics)(MCT).
- Department of Metallurgy and Materials Technology (M&MT).
- Department of Physics (P).
- Department of Physical Education (PE).
Every department has its own department head, laboratories and faculty. Departments often cooperate with each other since a considerable number of courses are of interdisciplinary nature.
Of these, the departments of MMT and MCT are among the oldest, as they were present from the time of the establishment of the institute. Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology is one of a few institutes in the state of Andhra Pradesh that offer a B. Tech course in MMT and MCT. The annual student intake of both these department is 60 each.
Along with MMT and MCT, the departments of M&H, PE and Physics are also the oldest. The department of M&H offers courses in Mathematics and English, which are compulsory for students of all branches.
The department of EEE is the most recent department in the institute. The first batch passed out in June, 2005. It has an annual intake of 60 students.
The department of CSE & IT is easily the largest department in the institute, in terms of student and faculty strength. The annual intake is 120 students into CSE, 60 students into IT .
The department of ECE is one of the more recent departments in the institute. It is the second largest, with an annual intake of 120 students.
Each department has its own strengths and weaknesses, in terms of academics, faculty, student participation, placements and infrastructure.

[edit] Infrastructure
As the institute is still in developmental stages, hundred percent facilities are not available. But most of the existing infrastructure is new and reliable.
- Classrooms: Each classroom has a seating capacity of more than 60 students. Modern teaching aids like LCD projectors and OHP projectors are used whenever needed.
- Laboratories: The institute has a number of laboratories on campus, each of which comes under a department. Most of the equipment is new and tested but students feel that there is immense scope for improvement.
- Library: The institute has a well-furnished library spread over an entire floor in Block B. Many students depend on the library as it contains a large number of volumes, related to all branches of engineering. Students can browse through many newspapers and magazines. Project reports and material on various competitive examinations are also available.
- Sports and games: This is one area in which the institute, one feels, must make progress, as most of the available infrastructure is outdated and partially damaged, and also disproportionate to the brilliant sporting talents of the students.
- Transport: Most students use private transport, as the institute provides few buses, that too in collaboration with the APSRTC. The staff, however, is provided with free transport, in buses belonging to the institute.

The institute has a Campus Placements Cell, which works towards attracting various IT companies to conduct on campus placement programs. In the last two years, companies like Wipro Technologies, Accenture, IBM, Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, ESSAR GROUP, SANDVIK ASIA have taken the best of the students from MGIT.
[edit] Miscellaneous
It is widely believed that MGIT was a spin off created by CBIT to cash in on the sudden boom in the IT industry that was witnessed by this part of India in the late 90s. In recent times the institute has seen an upswing of investment in its infrastructure.
In the institute's defence, it is one of the few of its type that is genuinely trying to better its reputation through growth in infrastructure, facilities and to a lesser extent, faculty. It’s not for nothing that MGIT witnesses an intense competition among the students fraternity for a single engineering seat.
