Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir was the ruler of the erstwhile Indian princely state of Kashmir. The first Maharaja was Gulab Singh, who became Raja of Jammu through a grant from the Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh, and subsequently accepted the throne of Kashmir.

The princely state of Kashmir came to be one of the major constituents of British India; the last Maharaja was Hari Singh who controversially acceded to India in 1947.
