[edit] History
Maha Bodhi School was founded in 1946 by Rev. Chee Hong of Leng Feng Bodhi Institute, who gave the task of founding a school based on Buddhist education to Miss Pitt Chin Hui and other Buddhist devotees. As a result, Maha Bodhi School was officially declared open on 12 January 1948, at the original shophouse at No. 743, Geylang Road, with an enrolment of 40 pupils. It had no proper facilities. In 1950, the school board decided to place the sponsorship of the school under the Singapore Buddhist Federation for further development. Mr Lee Choon Seng, Chairman of the Singapore Buddhist Federation formed a school building committee to raise funds for the development of the school. In 1951, due to the increasing number of enrolment, a new site at 50, Lorong 34, Geylang, was acquired, and on 1 December 1951, the school was officially declared open by the British High Commissioner Mr Malcolm MacDonald. In 1957 the school became a Government-Aided school. The school building was extended in 1966 at a cost of $800,000 into a 5-storey building. The extension was declared open on 20 December 1970. It became a Special Assistance Plan school, with increased emphasis on English and Chinese and the cultivation of moral values. A piece of land in Ubi, totalling 18,000 square metres, was exchanged for the previous school campus under the "Quid Pro Quo Exchange" Scheme of the Ministry of Education of Singapore. It now has around 2100 students.

[edit] School name
"Maha means Great in Sanskrit and Bodhi means Enlightenment, the way the Lord Buddha taught the world the truth and the path to Nirvana. The school is named thus as it hopes for its students to be able to take up the moral and character of the Lord Buddha; to emulate His examples as they absorb knowledge, wisdom and scientific techniques of the world; to live morally, truthfully and wisely." --Venerable Chan Siong Khye (BBM) Past Chairman of Singapore Budhhist Federation
