Madonna videography

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Madonna continues to push the barriers with her music videos. She has worked with many highly successful directors and has produced many music videos that are considered by many as works of art. Always controversial and sometimes misunderstood, her videos have depicted subjects such as teen pregnancy, religion, sex, and violence.

Footnotes:

  • 1 Two videos for "Dress You Up" exist, both of which were filmed live at Madonna's 1985 Virgin Tour. One version contains scenes of crowds cheering and waiting outside the arena as an introduction.
  • 1a The first version aired on MTV used the 5:00 minute Shep Pettibone remix edit, but later used the 7" edit to coincide with edits made after controversy arose over the Cher "If I Could Turn Back Time" video.
  • 2 In addition to the album version music video of "Vogue", a music video for the 12" edit also exists. No new material appears in this video; instead, the images from the original video are reused throughout the clip.
  • 3 The music video for "Hanky Panky" was actually a clip from Madonna's 1990 Blond Ambition Tour, which was then dubbed with the album version of the song.
  • 4 A censored and uncensored version of the "Erotica" video exist, though both were directed by Fabien Baron.
  • 5 In addition to the standard video of "Fever" directed by Stephane Sednaoui, a second video was released titled "Fever (ET/VL Bonus Mix)". It contains the same footage as the original video only re-edited, and includes the "Murk Boys Miami Mix Edit" of "Fever". There was also an additional video released to Europe containing clips from the videos "La Isla Bonita", "Express Yourself", "Cherish" and "Justify My Love".
  • 6 A live clip from 1993's The Girlie Show Tour was used as the music video for "Bye Bye Baby".
  • 7 In addition to the standard video of "Secret" directed by Melodie McDaniel, a second video was released titled "Secret (Dan-O-Rama Remix)". It contains the same footage as the standard video, with additional footage of Madonna singing while walking down a street in Harlem. The remix of "Secret" used is "Junior's Luscious Single Mix".
  • 8 The music videos for both "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" are excerpts from Evita.
  • 9 Madonna withdrew her original video for "American Life", which featured violent war images and a strong peace message, after a day of European airings, claiming that, in light of the recent start of the Iraq War, she did not wish to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret her video's meaning. An edited version featuring Madonna singing in military garb in front of world flags was instead released. A third version of the video, which features a slightly different ending from the original video, also exists.
  • 10 Madonna provided vocals and appeared in the music video for Britney Spears's song "Me Against the Music".

[edit] International Music Video and DVD releases

Madonna has released numerous music video titles since 1984 on VHS, Laserdisc, VCD and DVD. These listings include the official International videography, some titles and formats were only released in certain countries such as Japan or the UK.

Other releases such as the American Life DVD single (2003), Get Up Lisbon! - The Re-Invention World Tour Live (2005) and Sorry DVD Single (2006) were announced and later shelved by Warner Bros. Records. There was also a 20th Anniversary Box Set due to be released in 2003 with exclusive performances and videos but was also shelved due to a legal matter regarding Maverick Records against Warner Music Group. The CD mini-album Remixed & Revisited was released instead. The music video to American Life was also to be included as an extra on the DVD release of I'm Going To Tell You A Secret but was later omitted with no reason which upset quite a lot of fans.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the DVD releases of the tours Blond Ambition, The Virgin Tour and Re-Invention from Warner Music Vision.
