Madanapalli

Madanapalle, is a city in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is situated at a distance of 123 kilometers from temple city Tirupati and 130 kilometers from Bangalore. Madanapalle is an educational and cultural center from the days of Dr.Annie-Besant, the theosophist. The medical institutions like the Government Hospital, M.L.L Hospital, and Rajkumari Amrutkour T.B.Research Center are worth mentioning. Nearest railway station to Madanapalli is Mandanapalle Road station located on Dharmavaram-Pakala railway.

The climate is pleasant throughout the year. The old house of Jiddu Krishnamurthy, the great Philosopher and the founder of Rishi valley public school is also worth seeing here. The said house is now renovated and proposed for housing of Public Library.The most picturesque, scenic, picnic and summer resort, Horsley Hills is situated near Madanpalle in Chittoor District at an altitude of 4200 feet above sea level. Mr.W.D.Horsley, a British member of the civil service and then the District Collector of Cuddapah, who found the climate very hot, selected this part as his summer resort on the top of the hills. He constructed two houses, the Kachari Room and Milk Bungalow and developed as summer resort. The Governor's Bungalow, the Forest Bungalow, and Microwave station, View point, Enugumallamma Temple are worth seeing here. Madanapalle is also called as 'Andhra OOTY'. There is famous TB sanitorium situated 5 km from Madanapalle on way to Tirupati. This town has unique personalities who have contributed to various literary fields. The Indian National game of Hockey was first played in Annie Besant Theosophical college in Madanapalle. Last but not the least the Indian National Anthem "Janaganamana..." was translated in to English at Anne Besant Theosophical college in Madanapalle and the chair on which Rabindranath Tagore used is also available in that college.The rich heritage of theosophy where the foundations of new era philosophy has been seeded at Gynasa Lodge of Madanapalle.
