Mackay is a city in Custer County, Idaho, United States. The population was 566 at the 2000 census.

Mackay is located at 43°54′43″N, 113°36′49″W (43.911880, -113.613669)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²), all land.

About 20 miles north of Mackay is Idaho's highest mountain - Borah Peak, or as it is known by the locals, Mount Borah - with an elevation of 12,662. Right above Mackay you will find Mt. McCaleb, elevation 11,682.

The climate of Mackay ranges from -40 to 30 in January, February, and early March. In the summer temperatures range from 30 to 100 in some areas. Mackay has a fairly dry climate.

The main athletic attraction in Mackay is the talented Mackay Miners with 10 football State Championships in the 1A and A-4 divisions and 5 basketball State Championships. Volleyball, womens basketball and track are other athletic oppurtunities in Mackay. Go Miners!

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 566 people, 261 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 251.2/km² (651.8/mi²). There were 353 housing units at an average density of 156.7/km² (406.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.59% White, 0.35% Native American, 0.71% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.30% of the population.

There were 261 households out of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% were non-families. 39.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,807, and the median income for a family was $31,667. Males had a median income of $38,750 versus $20,357 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,237. About 13.0% of families and 18.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.5% of those under age 18 and 19.8% of those age 65 or over.
