Machakel

Machakel is one of the 105 woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Misraq Gojjam Zone, Machakel is bordered on the south by the Abay River which separates it from the Oromia Region, on the west by the Mirab Gojjam Zone, on the north by Bibugn, and on the east by Guzamn. Towns in Machakel include Amanuel and Elias.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 257,490, of whom 129,853 were males and 27,637 were females; 16,377 or 6.36% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 10.7%. With an estimated area of 2,035.63 square kilometers, Machakel has an estimated population density of 126.5 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 166.35.[1]
