Machadodorp

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Machadodorp is a small town situated above the escarpment in Mpumalanga province, South Africa with the Elands River running through the town. There is a natural radioactive spring here and is reputed to have powerful healing qualities. It is an important railway junction between Johannesburg and Nelspruit and is named after Joachim Machado, an engineer who surveyed the land for the proposed Pretoria-Delagoa Bay railway line. During the Second Boer War the town was a temporary seat of the Transvaal Volksraad after they evacuated Pretoria in 1900. Nearby is situated the Komati Gorge.
